The butterfly valve stem serves as the central torque shaft and pivotal connection between the actuator and the valve disc. Unlike the linear action of gate valve stems, butterfly valve stems perform precise quarter-turn rotations that directly control the disc’s position from fully closed to fully open. This design underpins the valve’s compact, cost-effective solution for isolation and throttling across diverse applications.
As the sole physical link rotating the disc, the stem must endure significant shear and torsional stresses, especially during throttling or when opening against differential pressure. Its cross-section and geometry are optimized to resist twisting, which could otherwise cause disc misalignment, improper sealing, or mechanical failure.
Martensitic stainless steels such as 17-4PH or 410/416 are industry standards for these stems, offering a robust balance of tensile and torsional strength, hardness, and moderate corrosion resistance. Chrome plating is often applied to enhance surface durability and resistance.
